John Francis Wade
John Francis Wade (1 January 1711 – 16 August 1786) was an English hymnist best known for his association with the hymn "Adeste Fideles," which was later translated as "O Come All Ye Faithful" by Frederick Oakeley in 1841. Although the authorship of the hymn is disputed, with figures such as St. Bonaventure and King John IV of Portugal suggested as possible composers, the earliest known manuscripts from 1946 bear Wade's signature, supporting his authorship. Wade, a Catholic layman, fled to France following the failed Jacobite rising of 1745. In France, he lived among exiled English Catholics, teaching music and working on church music for private use. His liturgical books often contained Jacobite symbolism, and some scholars, like Bennett Zon, have proposed that "Adeste Fideles" contains coded references to Bonnie Prince Charlie, serving as a birth ode to the Pretender, James Francis Edward Stuart.
