Lewis Henry Redner
Lewis Henry Redner (December 15, 1831 – August 29, 1908) was an esteemed American musician, renowned for composing the melody of the beloved Christmas carol "St. Louis," more commonly known as "O Little Town of Bethlehem." Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Redner balanced a career in the real-estate business with his passion for music, serving as an organist at four different churches throughout his life. Notably, he held the position of Organist/Choirmaster at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Philadelphia during two separate periods, from 1861 to 1864 and again from 1869 to 1871. It was here, on Christmas Eve of 1868, that he set to music a poem by Pastor Phillips Brooks, inspired by Brooks's visit to Bethlehem, resulting in the carol's first performance the following day.

Beyond his musical contributions, Redner was actively involved in charitable work, notably serving on the first board of the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter and soup kitchen, established in 1878. Despite his many accomplishments, Redner never married. He passed away at the Hotel Marlborough in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and was laid to rest in The Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia.
