Sylvie Vartan
Sylvie Vartan rocketed to fame in 1961 when she stepped in for English singer Gillian Hill, who failed to show up for a recording session in Paris with French pop idol Frankie Jordan. Sylvie's brother, Eddy, who was the studio engineer for the session, brought in his 16-year-old sister to perform the female part on the song "Panne d'essence" ("Out of gas"). The resulting single was a runaway success that launched a career spanning six decades. Known for her high-energy performances, Sylvie Vartan distinguished herself from previous French singers who tended to follow the Edith Piaf mold. Her popular songs include "La Maritza," "L’amour c’est comme une cigarette," "La plus belle pour aller danser," and "Irrésistiblement." Her albums include "Une vie en musique" (2015), "Tour de siècle" (1999), and "A L’Olympia" (1997).
