Curtis Mayfield
Curtis Lee Mayfield was an influential American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer, born on June 3, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. He began his musical journey in a gospel choir and formed his first group, The Alphatones, before joining The Impressions in 1956. As the lead singer and primary songwriter for The Impressions, Mayfield became known for integrating social awareness into soul music, penning classics like "People Get Ready," which became an anthem of the civil rights movement.

In 1970, Mayfield embarked on a solo career, releasing the critically acclaimed album Curtis and the soundtrack for the film Super Fly, both noted for their socially conscious themes. He was one of the first African American artists to own a recording studio and production company, Curtom Records, which allowed him to produce hits for other artists.

Tragically, in 1990, Mayfield was paralyzed from the neck down after an accident during a live performance. Despite this, he continued to create music, releasing his final album, New World Order, in 1996. Mayfield received numerous accolades, including a Grammy Legend Award and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, both as a member of The Impressions and as a solo artist. Curtis Mayfield passed away on December 26, 1999, in Roswell, Georgia, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneer of socially conscious music.
