Leaving school at 16, Clark's early career included working as a care assistant at Cane Hill psychiatric hospital and at Bonaparte Records, a local independent record store and label. This period coincided with the rise of the punk rock scene in London, which greatly influenced her musical direction.

Clark's unique blend of literary, socially engaged texts with innovative music has positioned her as a significant figure in contemporary music for over 45 years. Her debut album, "The Sitting Room," was released in 1982, and she has since produced over a dozen albums.
