Neneh Cherry
Neneh Cherry, born Neneh Mariann Karlsson on March 10, 1964, in Stockholm, Sweden, is a celebrated Swedish singer, songwriter, rapper, and broadcaster. Raised by her mother, Moki Cherry, a Swedish painter and textile artist, and her American jazz musician stepfather, Don Cherry, Neneh was exposed to a rich musical environment from a young age. Her biological father, Ahmadu Jah, was a musician from Sierra Leone.
Cherry began her musical career in London in the early 1980s, performing with punk and post-punk bands such as The Slits and Rip Rig + Panic. Her debut solo album, "Raw Like Sushi," released in 1989, featured the global hit "Buffalo Stance" and achieved significant commercial success, reaching number two on the UK Albums Chart. She continued her musical journey with albums like "Homebrew" (1992), "Man" (1996), and later works such as "Blank Project" (2014) and "The Versions" (2022).
Throughout her career, Cherry has been recognized for her eclectic fusion of hip-hop, post-punk, and dance music. Her collaboration with Senegalese artist Youssou N'Dour on the single "Seven Seconds" in 1994 further solidified her international acclaim. Cherry has won two Brit Awards and an MTV Europe Music Award, and she has been nominated for a Grammy Award.
Neneh Cherry's personal life includes her marriage to Cameron McVey, with whom she has two daughters, Tyson and Mabel, the latter of whom has followed in her mother's footsteps as a singer. Cherry's half-brother, Eagle-Eye Cherry, is also a musician, highlighting the family's deep musical roots.
