Ensemble Rustavi
The Rustavi Ensemble, officially known as the Georgian State Academic Ensemble Rustavi of Georgian Folk Song and Dance, was founded in 1968 by Anzor Erkomaishvili, a prominent singer and folklorist from a distinguished Georgian musical lineage. The ensemble is renowned for its performances of Georgian folk music and dance, characterized by the unique Georgian style of polyphonic singing, rich vocal timbres, and elaborate choreography. Rustavi's repertoire includes songs and dances for work and war, sacred hymns with intricate harmonies, and ethnographically authentic music from all regions of Georgia.
The ensemble has toured over 50 countries, gaining international acclaim for its vibrant performances and spectacular costumes. Rustavi's style synthesizes traditional regional folk sounds with a refined concert-oriented aesthetic. In 2001, the ensemble was awarded the UNESCO Pacha Prize for its efforts in safeguarding and promoting Georgian polyphonic singing.
The Rustavi Ensemble has released several recordings, including the 1998 CD "Mirangula," which features the globally recognized folk love song "Tsintskaro." Over the years, the ensemble has seen several artistic directors, with Davit Shanidze taking the role in November 2023.
