Mike Stern, born Michael Sedgwick on January 10, 1953, in Boston, Massachusetts, is a renowned American jazz guitarist celebrated for his contributions to jazz, jazz fusion, and post-bop genres. Raised in Washington, D.C., Stern began playing guitar at age 12, influenced by blues and rock legends like B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix. His formal music education began at the Berklee College of Music, where he studied under Mick Goodrick and Charlie Banacos, and developed a deep appreciation for jazz icons such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

Stern's professional career took off in 1976 with Blood, Sweat & Tears, followed by collaborations with drummer Billy Cobham and trumpeter Miles Davis, with whom he played from 1981 to 1983 and again in 1985. His time with Davis marked a significant period in his career, leading to his emergence as a key figure in the jazz world.
