Ensemble "Rustavi"
The Rustavi Ensemble, officially known as the Georgian State Academic Ensemble, is a renowned Georgian folk music group founded in 1968 by Anzor Erkomaishvili. Erkomaishvili, a singer and folklorist from a distinguished Georgian musical lineage, aimed to break ethnic boundaries by performing authentic music from all regions of Georgia. The ensemble is celebrated for its polyphonic singing style, rich vocal harmonies, and elaborate choreography, often accompanied by traditional Georgian dances.
The Rustavi Ensemble has toured over 50 countries, showcasing their unique blend of traditional and concert-oriented performances. Their music often features a cappella singing, occasionally supported by traditional stringed instruments like the chonguri and phanduri. The group's repertoire is known for its eclectic yet authentic approach, combining regional song styles and vocal timbres.
In 2001, the ensemble was awarded the UNESCO Pacha Prize for its efforts in safeguarding and promoting Georgian polyphonic singing. Their discography includes the 1998 CD "Mirangula," which helped introduce their music to a global audience. Over the years, the ensemble has seen various artistic directors, with Davit Shanidze appointed in November 2023 and Mikheil Javakhishvili in April 2025.
