The Guess Who
The Guess Who is a Canadian rock band that originated in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1965. The group achieved significant success in the late 1960s and early 1970s, particularly under the leadership of singer and keyboardist Burton Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman. Known for hit songs such as "American Woman," "These Eyes," "No Time," and "Laughing," The Guess Who became one of Canada's most successful rock bands.
The band's origins trace back to 1958 with Chad Allan forming a group called Al and the Silvertones. This group underwent several name changes, becoming Chad Allan and the Reflections and later Chad Allan and the Expressions. In 1965, they released a cover of "Shakin' All Over" under the name Guess Who?, a marketing strategy to suggest the band might be British, which helped the single become a hit.
In 1966, Burton Cummings joined the band, and they dropped the question mark from their name, officially becoming The Guess Who. Their breakthrough came with the 1969 album Wheatfield Soul, which featured the hit "These Eyes." Their 1970 album American Woman reached number one in both Canada and the United States, driven by the title track that became the first song by a Canadian band to top the Billboard Hot 100.
After Randy Bachman left the band in 1970, The Guess Who continued to produce successful music, with albums like Share the Land. They officially disbanded in 1975 but reunited several times for tours and special events, including a major reunion tour from 2000 to 2003.
In 2025, Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman announced they would reunite as The Guess Who, marking the first time in 23 years they would perform together under the band's name. The Guess Who's legacy includes numerous chart-topping singles and albums, making them a seminal part of Canadian rock history.
