Gerry and the Pacemakers were an English beat group that emerged prominently in the 1960s Merseybeat scene. The band was formed in 1959 by Gerry Marsden along with his brother Fred, Les Chadwick, and Arthur McMahon. They were contemporaries and early rivals of the Beatles, performing in the same venues in Hamburg, Germany, and Liverpool. Arthur McMahon, also known as Arthur Mack, was replaced on piano by Les Maguire around 1961. Like the Beatles, they hailed from Liverpool, were managed by Brian Epstein, and recorded by George Martin. Gerry and the Pacemakers were the second band to sign with Brian Epstein. Some of their popular songs include "You'll Never Walk Alone," "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," "Ferry Cross the Mersey," and "How Do You Do It." Their discography includes albums such as "Ferry Cross the Mersey" (1965) and "Girl on a Swing" (1966).
