The Archies
The Archies are an American fictional rock band that originated from Riverdale, a fictional town, but are associated with New York City in reality. They were created as part of the media produced by Archie Comics and gained fame through their appearance in the animated TV series, The Archie Show. The band was conceived in response to the success of The Monkees, with Don Kirshner seeking a musical act he could fully control. The Archies featured characters from the comics: guitarist/vocalist Archie Andrews, drummer Jughead Jones, bassist Reggie Mantle, percussionist/vocalist Betty Cooper, and keyboardist/vocalist Veronica Lodge.
The music for The Archies was performed by session musicians, with Ron Dante providing lead vocals and Toni Wine on duet and backing vocals. Their most notable hit, "Sugar, Sugar," became emblematic of the bubblegum pop genre, achieving significant chart success worldwide. The band was active in various forms from 1968 to 1973, and later in 1990, 2008, and from 2020 to 2023. In 2020, the band was reintroduced in the TV series Riverdale, with Kevin Keller replacing Reggie Mantle. The Archies also appeared in a feature film produced for Netflix, released on December 7, 2023.
