Bob Shad, born Abraham Shadrinsky on February 12, 1920, in New York, was a prominent American record producer and label owner who made significant contributions to the music industry over a 40-year career. He passed away on March 13, 1985, in Beverly Hills, California, and was laid to rest in the Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Shad's career began in the 1940s when he worked for Herman Lubinsky at Savoy Records and Al Green at National Records, where he produced renowned artists like Charlie Parker. In 1948, he founded his first label, Sittin' In With, producing blues and R&B artists such as Lightnin' Hopkins and Sonny Terry. By 1951, Shad had become the director of Artists and Repertoire (A&R) at Mercury Records, where he established the EmArcy label, producing jazz greats like Sarah Vaughan and Clifford Brown.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Shad continued to influence the music scene by founding several labels, including Time Records and Brent Records, and producing for artists across various genres. He was instrumental in the early careers of rock and pop acts like The Platters and Patti Page and even recorded Lou Reed's first vocal tracks.

In 1964, Shad founded Mainstream Records, which became a defining venture in his career. The label was known for its jazz, psychedelia, and rock releases, including the debut albums of Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company and Ted Nugent with The Amboy Dukes. Mainstream Records also featured artists like Dizzy Gillespie and Blue Mitchell.

Shad's legacy extends beyond his professional achievements. His grandson, Judd Apatow, a well-known writer and director, has spoken about Shad's influence and passion for music. Shad's wife, Molly Shad, appeared in Apatow's film "This Is 40."

Bob Shad is remembered as a maverick producer who left an indelible mark on the music industry, having produced over 800 albums and worked with numerous iconic artists. His story is one of passion, innovation, and a deep love for music.
