Tony Hester
Tony Hester was a prominent R&B songwriter and producer from Detroit, Michigan, active primarily during the 1960s and 1970s. He is best known for writing "In the Rain," a hit song for the Dramatics that became a staple in the R&B genre. Hester began his musical journey on Detroit's east side, attending St. Catherine High School and McComb College before leaving to pursue songwriting. His early work included writing "A Little Bit of Sympathy" for the Marvelettes at just 14 years old.
Despite offers from major labels like Motown and Golden World Records, Hester chose to remain independent, focusing on his craft rather than long-term contracts. He spent time at Hitsville U.S.A., learning from legendary producers Holland-Dozier-Holland, which informed his successful collaborations with the Dramatics. Hester wrote all the songs on the Dramatics' first two albums and contributed to their subsequent releases, crafting hits like "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get."
Hester's songwriting process involved creating titles first, then developing lyrics and melodies. He also wrote for other artists, including the Dells and the Platters. Tragically, his life and career were cut short when he was murdered in Detroit. Despite his struggles with drug addiction, Hester's legacy endures through his influential contributions to soul and R&B music.
