Brian Douglas Wilson (June 20, 1942 – June 11, 2025) was an iconic American musician, songwriter, singer, and record producer, best known as the co-founder and creative force behind the Beach Boys. Born in Inglewood, California, Wilson grew up in a musically inclined family and developed an early interest in harmonies, despite being almost completely deaf in his right ear. He was heavily influenced by artists like George Gershwin, the Four Freshmen, and Chuck Berry.
In 1961, Wilson formed the Beach Boys with his brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. The band quickly rose to fame with hits like "Surfin' U.S.A.," "California Girls," and "Fun, Fun, Fun," establishing the "California sound" that became synonymous with the sun-soaked lifestyle of the West Coast. Wilson's innovative approach to music production and songwriting was exemplified in the critically acclaimed album Pet Sounds (1966), which is often cited as one of the greatest albums of all time.
Despite his professional success, Wilson struggled with mental health issues and substance abuse, leading to periods of reclusion. His collaboration with psychologist Eugene Landy in the 1980s, though initially helpful, became controversial due to Landy's exploitative control over Wilson's life and career. After breaking free from Landy's influence, Wilson experienced a resurgence in the 1990s, releasing successful solo albums and completing the long-awaited Smile project in 2004.
Wilson was married twice, first to Marilyn Rovell and later to Melinda Ledbetter, and had seven children, including Carnie and Wendy Wilson. He received numerous accolades throughout his career, including Grammy Awards for his solo work and contributions to the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson passed away in Beverly Hills, California, in 2025 at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential figures in the history of popular music.
