Chris Christian
Chris Christian, born Lon Christian Smith on February 7, 1951, in Abilene, Texas, is a multifaceted American songwriter, record producer, and record label executive. His illustrious career spans several decades, during which he has made significant contributions to both pop and contemporary Christian music genres.
Christian's songwriting prowess is evidenced by the impressive roster of artists who have recorded his songs, including icons like Elvis Presley, Olivia Newton-John, Hall and Oates, Natalie Cole, Sheena Easton, The Pointer Sisters, Al Jarreau, The Carpenters, Amy Grant, Patti Austin, Dionne Warwick, America, and many more. His work has not only been celebrated by listeners but has also garnered critical acclaim, with his productions earning nine Grammy Award nominations and four wins. Additionally, he has been recognized by the Gospel Music Association with seven Dove Award nominations, winning five.
In the early 1970s, Christian was part of the trio Cotton, Lloyd & Christian, which enjoyed success with hits on the Billboard adult contemporary chart. The group performed on prominent shows like Dick Clark's American Bandstand and Midnight Special. As a solo artist, Christian appeared on The Merv Griffin Show and Solid Gold and served as a judge on Star Search. His talents also extended to playing guitar with notable musicians such as Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, and the Wayne Newton band.
Christian is particularly renowned for launching Amy Grant's career, signing her to his production company at the age of 16 and producing her debut album. His influence in the industry is further highlighted by his role in producing albums for a diverse array of artists, including the Pointer Sisters, Patti Austin, Al Jarreau, Natalie Cole, B.J. Thomas, and many others.
In 1981, Christian founded his own label, Home Sweet Home Records, where he continued to nurture and produce talent. He also ventured into educational media, creating the children's series "Gerbert," which aired on PBS and ABC Family, winning an ACE award for best Pre-School Show.
Beyond music, Christian's entrepreneurial spirit led him to purchase The Studios at Las Colinas and engage in various business ventures, including a joint venture with Radio Shack, Dish Network, and Sirius Radio. His contributions to music and media have been recognized with his induction into the West Texas Music Hall of Fame.
