Shirley Bassey
Dame Shirley Veronica Bassey, born on January 8, 1937, in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, Wales, is a celebrated Welsh singer known for her powerful, sultry voice and glamorous stage presence. She is recognized as one of the first Black British entertainers to achieve both national and international fame. Bassey, the youngest of seven children, was raised in a working-class area of Cardiff by her English mother after her Nigerian father left when she was just three years old.

Leaving school at 15, she worked in a factory and sang in men's clubs before gaining attention in a London Christmas show in 1955. Her breakthrough led to a record contract and her first British hit with "Banana Boat Song" in 1957. She continued to top the UK charts with hits like "As I Love You" (1959) and "Reach for the Stars/Climb Every Mountain" (1961). Bassey remained a prominent figure in British music into the 1970s and experienced a resurgence in 2007 with a performance at the Glastonbury Festival and a Top Ten album, Get the Party Started.

In the United States, Bassey is best known for her iconic James Bond theme songs, including "Goldfinger" (1964), "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971), and "Moonraker" (1979). Her later works include albums such as The Performance (2009), Hello Like Before (2014), and I Owe It All to You (2020).

Bassey's contributions to music were recognized with a BRIT Award for Best Female Solo Artist in 1977. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1993 and later elevated to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2000.
