John Dowland
John Dowland (1563-1626?) was an influential English lutenist, poet, and singer, often regarded as possibly history's first published singer-songwriter. Despite being turned down for a position at the court of Queen Elizabeth I, Dowland secured a well-paying role in Denmark, where he composed music for King Christian IV. He was prolific in publishing his lyrics and lute tablatures in England. His works, including notable songs like "Flow my tears" and "Come Again, Sweet Love Doth Now Invite," were largely neglected after his death until they were revived during the early music boom of the 20th century. His albums, such as "The First Booke of Songs or Ayres" (1597) and "A Pilgrimes Solace" (1612), remain significant contributions to early music.
