Madhouse was an American jazz fusion band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, created by the musician Prince. The band released two albums and several singles in 1987. The concept of Madhouse emerged from Prince's interest in creating an instrumental jazz-funk album, an idea he had considered since working with Eric Leeds on a side project called The Family in 1985. Sessions with Leeds and other musicians, including members of Sheila E.'s band and Wendy & Lisa's families, led to the creation of Madhouse. The band was presented as a fictional group, with Prince and Eric Leeds being the primary contributors to their first album, "8." The Japanese LP release credits the band members as Eric Leeds on saxophone, John Lewis on drums, Bill Lewis on bass, and Austra Chanel on keyboards, although "Austra Chanel" was rumored to be a pseudonym for Prince. The albums featured tracks titled numerically, and the cover art included 1940s-themed imagery. Despite plans for additional albums titled "24," only one track from these sessions was officially released, with the rest remaining unreleased or available only as bootlegs.
