Mahalia Jackson
Mahalia Jackson (October 26, 1911 – January 27, 1972) was an American gospel singer, renowned for her rich, powerful voice. She became one of the most influential gospel singers in the world, with her music reaching millions and transcending the traditional black gospel market to extend beyond the U.S. to Europe and the world. One of her most notable moments was when she exclaimed, “Tell em about the dream Martin,” prompting Martin Luther King Jr. to veer from his original speech and deliver what became one of the most impactful speeches in world history. Some of her popular songs include "If I Can Help Somebody," "Down By the Riverside," and "My God Is Real." Her notable albums include "The Original Apollo Sessions" (2006), "The Best of Mahalia Jackson" (1995), and "Sings the Best-Loved Hymns of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." (1968).
