Inez Foxx
Inez Foxx was an American rhythm and blues and soul singer, born Inez Rebecca Fox on September 9, 1937, in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was best known for her work with her elder brother Charlie Foxx, with whom she formed a popular duo in the 1960s. The siblings were known for their hit "Mockingbird," which reached the top 10 on both the US rhythm and blues and pop charts in 1963. The song was notable for its success, selling over one million copies and earning a gold disc from the RIAA. Inez sang lead vocals while Charlie provided backing vocals and played guitar.
The duo's music played a significant role in the Northern soul movement, and they were known for their dynamic live performances. Although their subsequent releases did not achieve the same level of success as "Mockingbird," they continued to record and perform, with songs like "Ask Me" and "Hurt by Love" making it onto the charts.
Inez Foxx married songwriter and producer Luther Dixon in the late 1960s, and together they contributed to the Platters' hit "I Love You 1000 Times." However, their marriage ended in divorce. Inez also pursued a solo career, beginning in 1969, but her popularity waned in the 1970s. She passed away on August 25, 2022, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 84.
