Lesley Gore
Lesley Gore, born Lesley Sue Goldstein on May 2, 1946, in New York City, was an influential American singer and songwriter. Raised in a middle-class Jewish family in Tenafly, New Jersey, she attended the Dwight School for Girls and later graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a degree in American literature. Discovered at the age of 16, Gore's breakout hit "It's My Party" reached number one on the Billboard charts in 1963, marking the beginning of her successful music career. She followed this with several other hits, including "Judy's Turn to Cry," "She's a Fool," and her signature song, "You Don't Own Me."

Beyond her music career, Gore worked as an actress and television personality, hosting the LGBT-oriented public television show "In the Life" in the 2000s. She also collaborated with her brother, Michael Gore, composing songs for the film "Fame," including the Academy Award-nominated "Out Here On My Own." Lesley Gore passed away on February 16, 2015, in New York City, leaving behind a legacy of empowering pop music.
