Frankie Lymon
Franklin Joseph Lymon, known as Frankie Lymon, was born on September 30, 1942, in Washington Heights, New York City. His parents, Jeanette and Howard Lymon, were involved in music through their gospel group, the Harlemaires, and Frankie, along with his brothers, sang with the Harlemaire Juniors. At the age of 12, Lymon joined a local doo-wop group, which eventually became known as the Teenagers. The group, consisting of Lymon, Jimmy Merchant, Sherman Garnes, Joe Negroni, and Herman Santiago, found success with their first single, "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," in 1956. This song became their biggest hit. Lymon embarked on a solo career in mid-1957, but both his solo career and the Teenagers' success waned. Tragically, Lymon died from a heroin overdose on February 27, 1968, at the age of 25. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 as a member of the Teenagers. His life story was later depicted in the 1998 film "Why Do Fools Fall in Love."
