Guy Lombardo
Guy Lombardo, born Gaetano Alberto Lombardo on June 19, 1902, in London, Ontario, Canada, was a prominent Canadian-American bandleader and violinist known for his "sweet jazz" style. He formed the Royal Canadians in 1924 with his brothers Carmen, Lebert, and Victor, and other musicians from his hometown. The band was famous for creating "the sweetest music this side of Heaven" and sold between 100 and 300 million records during their lifetimes. Lombardo's music was a staple of New Year's Eve celebrations, earning him the title "Mr. New Year's Eve." His broadcasts from the Roosevelt Grill in New York City and later the Waldorf Astoria Hotel became a beloved tradition. Lombardo became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1938 and continued to lead his band until his death on November 5, 1977, in Houston, Texas. His legacy includes the enduring tradition of playing "Auld Lang Syne" at New Year's celebrations.
