Pietro Mascagni
Pietro Mascagni was born on December 7, 1863, in Livorno, Italy, to Domenico and Emilia Mascagni. His father owned a bakery, and despite his father's hopes for a legal career for him, Mascagni pursued music with the support of his uncle Stefano. He began his musical education at the Instituto Musicale di Livorno under Alfredo Soffredini and quickly demonstrated his compositional talents with works such as Sinfonia in do minore and Ave Maria.

In 1881, Mascagni's cantata In Filanda won first prize at a musical contest in Milan, marking the beginning of his promising career. He moved to Milan in 1882, where he studied at the Milan Conservatory and met influential composers like Giacomo Puccini. However, he left the Conservatory in 1885 without completing his studies to work as a conductor for operetta companies across Italy.

Mascagni's life took a significant turn when he married Lina Carbognani in 1888 and settled in Cerignola, where he became the master of music and singing at the local philharmonia. His breakthrough came with the composition of Cavalleria rusticana, which premiered in 1890 and became a monumental success, establishing the Verismo movement in opera. Despite being labeled a "one-opera man," Mascagni's other works, such as L'amico Fritz and Iris, also gained recognition, particularly in Europe.

Throughout his career, Mascagni composed fifteen operas, an operetta, and various orchestral and vocal pieces. He was celebrated not only as a composer but also as a conductor, enjoying immense success during his lifetime. Mascagni passed away on August 2, 1945, in Rome, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of opera.
