Al Martino
Al Martino, born Jasper Cini on October 7, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was a renowned American traditional pop and standards singer, as well as an actor. He was one of the prominent Italian-American pop crooners, achieving significant success from the early 1950s to the mid-1970s. Martino's career was notably marked by his debut single "Here in My Heart," which became a massive hit in 1952, making him the first American artist to top the charts in Great Britain. This success led to a contract with Capitol Records and a series of successful singles.
Martino's career faced challenges due to interference from the Mafia, which forced him to relocate to Britain for a period. Despite these challenges, he continued to perform and record, achieving moderate success in the UK. He returned to the United States in 1958 and worked to re-establish his career, eventually scoring hits like "I Love You Because," "Spanish Eyes," and "Painted, Tainted Rose."
In addition to his music career, Martino was known for his role as Johnny Fontane in the iconic film "The Godfather." His portrayal of the character, who was rumored to be based on Frank Sinatra, further cemented his place in popular culture.
Martino passed away on October 13, 2009, in Springfield, Pennsylvania, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved pop crooner and actor.
