Goombay Dance Band
Goombay Dance Band is a German musical group formed in 1979 by Oliver Bendt, with its origins in Hamburg, Germany. The band's name was inspired by a small bay on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. Known for their distinctive sound that blends soca, calypso, and western pop, they became popular in the early 1980s, achieving significant commercial success with hits like "Sun of Jamaica," "Seven Tears," and "Aloha-Oe, Until We Meet Again." Their debut album, Sun of Jamaica, reached the top 5 in several countries, while "Seven Tears" became a number 1 hit in the UK.
The band consisted of members Oliver Bendt, Alicia Bendt, Dorothy Hellings, Wendy Doorsen, "Dizzy" Daniel Moorehead, and Mario Slijngaard, with past members including Beverlee Wallace and Wendy Walker. Despite their early success, subsequent releases did not achieve the same level of attention, although the band continued to release music into the 1990s and beyond. They celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2009 with a collection of new songs and re-recorded hits. Oliver Bendt toured with the band until his retirement in 2016.
