William King
William King, born on January 30, 1949, in Birmingham, Alabama, is an American singer, musician, and choreographer renowned for being a founding member of the legendary Motown group, The Commodores. King's musical journey began at Tuskegee University, where he met his fellow band members. As a versatile instrumentalist, he plays the trumpet, guitar, synthesizer, flute, and congas/percussion and also serves as the group's choreographer.
In addition to his musical talents, King has made significant contributions as a songwriter, co-composing hits like "Lady" and "I'm In Love" with Harold Hudson and his wife, Shirley Hanna-King. His dedication to music led him to choose a career with The Commodores over professional tennis, despite receiving all-conference selections in the SIAC during his college years.
King married his songwriting partner Shirley Hanna-King in 1976, with whom he shares four children. In 2020, he married Deborah Walker-King. An avid tennis player, King was inducted into the SIAC Hall of Fame in 2024, recognizing his dual achievements in sports and music. His enduring career with The Commodores has left an indelible mark on the R&B and soul music landscape.
