George Whitefield
George Whitefield was not primarily a lyricist, but a renowned preacher and an evangelist who compiled hymn books and occasionally revised hymns by others, most notably Charles Wesley. His most famous act as a "lyricist" was altering the first two lines of Wesley's Christmas hymn "Hark, how all the welkin rings" to the more familiar "Hark! The Herald Angels sing".
Role in Hymnody
Compiler: Whitefield created his own popular collection of hymns, A Collection of Hymns for Social Worship (1753), featuring works by various authors like Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley.
Editor/Reviser: He made significant alterations to existing hymns, with his revision of Charles Wesley's "Hark, how all the welkin rings" becoming widely known and incorporated into future versions of the hymn.
