La Combinacion
Octavio Figueroa's La Combinación is a prominent salsa band based in Los Angeles, formed by pianist Octavio Figueroa and Peruvian sonero Willy Cadenas. Since moving to Los Angeles in 1982, Figueroa has been an influential figure in the local Latin-salsa music scene. Prior to forming La Combinación, he led the La Sorpresa Salsa Orchestra for six years. La Combinación is known for performing at top salsa venues in Los Angeles, including the Conga Room, The Century Club, The Rumba Club, Steven’s Steakhouse, and Havana on Sunset with a smaller ensemble.
The band has opened for renowned artists such as Tito Puente, Oscar De León, Eddie Santiago, Bob James, and Grupo Niche, and has backed up salseros like Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez, Andy Montañez, Melcochita, Nora, and Tony Vega. Figueroa occasionally performs internationally, having spent time in Tokyo and worked as a musical director for Princess Cruises. He is also committed to community work, teaching Latin rhythms to inner-city youth and promoting Peruvian music and culture.
La Combinación has been a stepping stone for many sought-after Latin musicians, including trombonist Art Velazco, trumpeters Ramón Flores and Sal Cracciolo, percussionists Papo Rodriguez and Michito Sánchez, and guitarist Ramon Stagnaro. Figueroa has released two CDs: one with La Sorpresa and La Combinación Salsa Orchestras, and another titled "Amazonas," featuring Latin-American songs with Andean instruments.
