Jacques Gauthé
Jacques Gauthé (born June 12, 1939, in Gaujac, France, and died June 10, 2007, in Gaujac) was a notable French jazz reedist. As a teenager, Gauthé studied under the tutelage of jazz legends Claude Luter and Sidney Bechet. In 1957, he formed his own band, collaborating with jazz greats such as Don Byas, Mezz Mezzrow, Albert Nicholas, Lucky Thompson, and Benny Waters. During the 1960s, he established the Old Time Jazz Band, featuring musicians like Enzo Mucci and Claude Tissendier. In 1972, Gauthé relocated to New Orleans, where he became a fixture at Preservation Hall and performed with prominent artists including Alvin Alcorn, Wallace Davenport, Freddie Kohlman, Freddy Lonzo, Louis Nelson, Steve Pistorius, and Teddy Riley. Gauthé's contributions to jazz were significant, as he bridged the French and American jazz scenes, leaving a lasting impact on the genre.
