Brooks Bowman
Brooks Bowman (October 21, 1913 – October 17, 1937) was an American composer best known for his jazz standard "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)." Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Bowman attended University School in Cleveland and Asheville School in North Carolina before briefly studying at Stanford University. He transferred to Princeton University in 1933, where he became involved with the Princeton Triangle Club, writing songs for their musicals, including "East of the Sun" for the 1934 production "Stags at Bay." He also wrote "What a Relief!" for the 1936 production.

After graduating from Princeton in 1936, Bowman moved to California to work as a songwriter for Selznick International Pictures. His career was cut short when he died in a car accident on October 17, 1937, just days before his 24th birthday. Bowman is buried in Grandview Cemetery in Salem, Ohio.
