Bobby Caldwell
Bobby Caldwell, born Robert Hunter Caldwell on August 15, 1951, in New York City, was an influential American singer, songwriter, and musician known for his contributions to R&B, soul, jazz, and adult contemporary music. Raised in Miami, Florida, Caldwell was exposed to a diverse range of musical influences, including Haitian, Latin, reggae, and R&B, which shaped his eclectic style. His parents, Bob and Carolyn Caldwell, were involved in show business, which further immersed him in the world of music from a young age.
Caldwell began playing piano and guitar at the age of 12 and was drawn to genres like rock and roll, jazz, and rhythm and blues. He was part of a Miami band called Katmandu and later gained experience as a rhythm guitarist for Little Richard. His big break came in 1978 when he signed with TK Records and released his debut album, featuring the hit single "What You Won't Do for Love." The song became his signature piece, reaching the top ten on various Billboard charts and being covered and sampled by numerous artists.
Caldwell's career spanned several decades, during which he released multiple albums and wrote songs for other artists, including the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 single "The Next Time I Fall" for Amy Grant and Peter Cetera. His work was widely sampled by hip hop and R&B artists, cementing his influence on the music industry.
In addition to his recording success, Caldwell achieved popularity in Japan and Asia, where he sold out shows and earned gold and platinum status. He also starred as Frank Sinatra in the Las Vegas production "The Rat Pack Is Back," receiving critical acclaim for his performance.
Despite suffering from severe side effects of a prescription antibiotic in 2017, which limited his mobility, Caldwell's music continued to resonate with audiences worldwide. He performed his last show in Las Vegas on February 15, 2020, and passed away on March 14, 2023, at his home in Great Meadows, New Jersey, at the age of 71. His legacy endures through his timeless music and the countless artists he inspired.
