Richard Bernhard Smith
Richard Bernhard Smith (September 29, 1901 – September 28, 1935) was an American lyricist best known for writing the lyrics to the popular Christmas song "Winter Wonderland," composed by Felix Bernard. Born in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, Smith was the son of Eliza (Brunig) and John H. Smith, a partner in a glass manufacturing plant. Raised in an Episcopalian family, he graduated from Honesdale School in 1920 and attended Pennsylvania State College. On March 30, 1930, he married Jean Connor from Scranton. In 1931, Smith was diagnosed with tuberculosis, a disease that ultimately claimed his life on September 28, 1935, at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, just one day before his 34th birthday. He was buried in Glen Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale. Despite his short life, Smith's contribution to music, particularly through "Winter Wonderland," has left a lasting legacy.
