Stuart Gorrell
Stuart Graham Steven Gorrell (September 17, 1901 – August 10, 1963) was an American lyricist best known for writing the lyrics to the song "Georgia on My Mind." Born in Knox, Indiana, Gorrell attended Indiana University Bloomington, where he became friends and a fraternity brother with Hoagy Carmichael. The two collaborated on "Georgia on My Mind" after Gorrell heard Carmichael play the melody at a party in New York City. Gorrell stayed up all night with Carmichael to work on the song, ultimately writing the lyrics. Despite the success of "Georgia on My Mind," Gorrell pursued a career in banking and never wrote another song lyric. Carmichael, acknowledging Gorrell's contribution, sent him royalty checks, which helped pay for Gorrell's daughter's college education. Gorrell passed away in 1963, leaving behind a legacy as a one-time lyricist for a timeless classic.
