The Coasters
The Coasters are an American rhythm and blues/rock and roll vocal group formed on October 12, 1955, in Los Angeles, California. The group originated when Carl Gardner and Bobby Nunn left the Robins to form a new ensemble under the guidance of the songwriting and producing team Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The Coasters were initially comprised of Gardner, Nunn, Billy Guy, Leon Hughes, and guitarist Adolph Jacobs. They gained fame with their humorous storytelling hits, many of which were penned by Leiber and Stoller.

Their first single, "Down in Mexico," became an R&B hit in 1956. The following year, they achieved crossover success with "Young Blood" and "Searchin'," the latter topping the R&B chart for 13 weeks. The Coasters' most notable lineup included Gardner, Guy, Cornell Gunter, and Will "Dub" Jones, who recorded the iconic "Yakety Yak," which became their only national number one single. Other popular songs include "Charlie Brown" and "Poison Ivy."

The Coasters' influence extended beyond their initial success, as their records became a significant part of the doo-wop legacy through the 1960s. In 1987, they were honored as the first group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their place in music history.
