Richard Holmes
Richard Arnold "Groove" Holmes was an influential American jazz organist born on May 2, 1931, in Camden, New Jersey. He became renowned for his work in the hard bop and soul jazz genres, with his most famous recording being "Misty" in 1965. Holmes's career spanned from 1961 until his death in 1991, during which he recorded numerous albums for labels such as Pacific Jazz, Prestige, Groove Merchant, and Muse. His debut album, featuring guest artist Ben Webster, was recorded in March 1961. Holmes frequently collaborated with tenor saxophonist Houston Person and performed with singer Jimmy Witherspoon, including one of his last performances at the 1991 Chicago Blues Festival. Despite battling prostate cancer and performing his final concerts in a wheelchair, Holmes continued to share his music until his passing from a heart attack on June 29, 1991, in St. Louis, Missouri.
