Dalida
Dalida, born Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti on January 17, 1933, in Cairo, Egypt, was a French-Italian singer and actress who achieved remarkable international success. Raised in a musical family, her father was a concertmaster at the Khedivial Opera House, which fostered her early love for music. Despite a challenging childhood marked by her father's imprisonment during WWII and his subsequent death, Dalida pursued her passion for the arts.
Dalida's career began in acting, debuting in the film "A Glass and a Cigarette" in 1955. However, it was her singing talent that catapulted her to fame. Signing with Barclay Records, she achieved her first major hit with "Bambino" in 1956, becoming the top-selling recording artist in France from 1957 to 1961. Her music, which spanned genres like pop and disco, resonated across Europe and Latin America, and she collaborated with notable artists such as Julio Iglesias and Charles Aznavour.
Her personal life, however, was fraught with tragedy. The suicide of her partner Luigi Tenco in 1967 deeply affected her, and she struggled with depression throughout her life. Despite these challenges, Dalida continued to perform and record music, forming the record label International Show with her brother Orlando.
Dalida's legacy includes over 140 million records sold worldwide and a repertoire of iconic songs such as "Gigi l'amoroso" and "Paroles, paroles." Her impact on French music remains significant, though her life ended in tragedy when she took her own life on May 3, 1987, in Paris. She is buried at Montmartre Cemetery, and her memory is honored with monuments like her tomb and a bust at Place Dalida in Paris.
