Raised in a musical family, her father, Cyril Perfect, was a concert violinist and music lecturer, while her mother, Beatrice, was a medium and faith healer. McVie began her music career in the mid-1960s British blues scene, notably with the band Chicken Shack, where she gained recognition for her soulful contralto voice and earned a Melody Maker award for female vocalist of the year. She joined Fleetwood Mac as a session musician in 1968 and became a full-time member in 1970. McVie contributed significantly to the band's success with her songwriting, penning hits such as "Say You Love Me," "Don't Stop," "Everywhere," and "Little Lies."
