Cockney Rebel was an English rock band formed in London in 1972, fronted by ex-journalist Steve Harley. Initially emerging with the release of their single "Sebastian" in 1973, the band quickly gained attention for their unique blend of pop, rock, and glam rock. Their debut album, "The Human Menagerie," although not a commercial success, was critically acclaimed and helped establish a dedicated following. The band achieved significant success with their second single, "Judy Teen," and their second album, "The Psychomodo," which showcased their adventurous and ambitious style.

Despite their success, tensions within the band arose, primarily due to Harley's dominant role and self-publicizing nature, which led to the departure of all original members except drummer Stuart Elliott. The band was rebranded as Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, and in 1975, they released "The Best Years of Our Lives," featuring the UK Number One hit "Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)." This track became the band's biggest selling hit and remains their most enduring song.

After a period of decline in the late 1970s, Cockney Rebel disbanded in 1977, but Harley revived the name in 1998. The band continued to perform and release new material, including the 2005 album "Quality of Mercy." Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel remained active until 2024, marking a significant presence in the music scene for over five decades.
