George Winston
George Otis Winston III (February 11, 1949 – June 4, 2023) was an influential American pianist known for his contributions to contemporary instrumental music. Born in Hart, Michigan, and raised in Montana, Mississippi, and Florida, Winston developed an early interest in the R&B, rock, pop, and jazz genres, particularly inspired by organists. His musical journey took a pivotal turn in 1967 when he was captivated by Vince Guaraldi's music from the Peanuts specials, leading him to explore the organ and later the piano.

Winston's career took off with his 1980 album "Autumn," followed by "Winter into Spring" (1982) and "December" (1982), all of which achieved platinum status. He released a total of 16 solo albums, selling over 15 million records worldwide. His 1994 album "Forest" earned him a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album, and he received four other Grammy nominations throughout his career.

Winston's musical style was diverse, encompassing stride piano, New Orleans R&B, and what he termed "rural folk piano." Despite being associated with the new age genre, he preferred to describe his music as "folk piano." In addition to the piano, Winston played the guitar and harmonica and founded Dancing Cat Records to promote Hawaiian slack-key guitar music.

Throughout his life, Winston battled cancer, beginning with a diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome in 2013. He passed away on June 4, 2023, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, leaving behind a legacy of melodic and pastoral music that continues to inspire listeners worldwide.
